Jura 16 Diurachs’ Own
Jura is the name of the island where the distillery is located
Scotch Single Malt
Region: Islands
16 years old
40% ABV
Un-peated
Matured in ex-Bourbon casks, finished in ex-Sherry casks
Chill filtered
Color: amber +2, with the artificial caramel
Nose: first: strange, second: specific. Caramel, flour, toasted bread with butter and salt (seriously) … after a while, „normal”, familiar smells appear. Raisins, vanilla, maple syrup, you can feel the fruity influence of Sherry Oloroso, ripe bananas, almonds, resin, hazelnuts, old wood. Alcohol is well hidden. 17/25
Palate: an impression of the bitter chocolate appears very clearly. Citrus peel, ginger, wood, porridge, prunes, roasted bread crust, butterscotch. It tastes better than it smells. 19/25
Finish: baked apples, buckwheat (or chestnut) honey, walnuts, cardamom, tarragon. Pretty long and very pleasant. 21,5 / 25
Balance: Strong wood accents are intertwined with Sherry’s dryness. You feel the light harshness, but it’s not alcoholic, but rather spicy, peppery, paprika spiciness. All in all, it’s quite interesting, surprising Whisky. I think that when you try it, even when you won’t really like it, you’ll remember it anyway – and when somebody would give you a dram of it few years later, you will immediately remember its taste. 20/25
Overall: 77,5/ 100
Unfortunately, so far, each Jura I tried, looked almost the same: caramel e-150 is its constant ingredient, used apparently a bit over-measure. You can see it in the picture below.
From left: Origin 10, Diurachs’ Own 16, Superstition, Prophecy.
Why do they still think that people will always buy a darker whisky anyway, not looking at whether the color is natural or not?
… but this is a topic for a separate post.
Other reviews:
Murray (2017): 90.5 / 100
Serge (2006): 81/100
Price: about 55 €. As for the sixteen-year-old Whiskey, not too much. Maybe it’s not a Masterpiece, but definitely worth to try at least once.
