Lagavulin 16
This time there’s classic of the classics on my table: Lagavulin 16. The basic version of the great whisky, bottled at the distillery.
Lagavulin 16
Lagavulin means „hollow of the mill”
Scotch Single Malt
Region: Islay
16 years old
43% ABV
Strongly peated: 35 PPM
Matured in ex-bourbon barrels, finished in ex-sherry casks
Chill filtered
Color: amber + 1, with the addition of artificial caramel
Tasting notes
Nose: very subtle. The whole forest in one glass. Old wood, prunes, hay, sweet Sherry, dried figs, dates, ripe nectarines, marzipan, sea air. Everything is wonderfully enveloped in a distinct accent of the smoke from the campfire. The alcohol is very well hidden. 22/25
Palate: smoked plums, smoke, wood, maple syrup, marzipan, cappuccino, resin, arugula, apricot kernels, chocolate liqueur. Pretty sweet – just like in the smell. 21/25
Finish: smoke, arugula, honey, semi-dry wine, ripe bananas, cocoa, something lightly burned – but it’s very pleasant. Quite long and really … reeeeeeeeally pleasant. 22/25
Balance: there’s nothing to complain … except for two things 😉 chill filtration and the addition of artificial caramel. Besides, this Whisky is almost perfect. 22/25
Overall: 87/100
Other reviews:
Murray (2017): 95/100
Serge (2017): 87/100
Ralfy (2016): 87/100
Price: in Poland, from about PLN 210. In Germany, in the Edeka store for 50 €.
Conclusion
I compared a few sixteen-year-old Lagavulins. You can sense the minimum differences in different bottles (from different years), but it is always the same – a very high level. A brilliant Whisky.
I’m always happy to come back to it. I can highly recommend!
