Laphroaig 10
Today, after a long period of time, I meet again the ten years old whisky from the distillery, whose name evokes goose bumps for many fans of peat and smoke. Ladies and Gentelmen: It’s the Laphroaig 10 – a well known peat-monster, recognizable worldwide.
Laphroaig 10
Laphroaig means „hollowed out by a great bay”
Scotch Single Malt
Region: Islay
10 years
40% ABV
Heavily peated 35-45 PPM
Matured in ex-Bourbon casks
Chill filtered
Color: amber + 1, with the addition of artificial caramel
Tasting notes
Nose: ;-D Here it comes! SMOKE! Petrol, pitch, bandages, tennis balls (sounds funny but, I really feel these things). Egg liquor, caramel, vanilla … something, like a sea breeze at the dawn. In the background you can feel the wind and the fading fire. Gasoline and smoke are constantly returning. This smoke covers the alcohol better than 10 years spent in the barrels. The smell hypnotizes and knocks you out. I adore it. 22/25
Palate: Smoke, ash, wood, candle crayons (yes, yes – I know how they taste :-D), marjoram, plum jam. Slightly sweet and very pleasant. Dried plums cooked in wine, lightly burnt caramel, bourbon, muscovado sugar. 22/25
Finish: coffee liqueur, vanilla, smoke, bitter chocolate, buckwheat honey, allspice, cloves, ashes from the fire, rosemary, resin. 21 / 25
Balance: what should I write? A brilliant Whisky. Typical Islay world. The only thing that bothers me is the chill filtration and the addition of artificial caramel. 21/25
Overall: 86 / 100
Other reviews:
Murray (2017): 90/100
Serge (2016): 84/100
Ralfy (2017): 83/100
Price: starts from about 25 €, reaches up to about 35.
I regret that the tasting is over and my glass is now empty, but I still have a lot left in the bottle (which makes me very happy). If you were looking for Laphroaig without an artificial caramel, reach for Laphroaig Select. If you are interested in the same Whisky without chill filtration, look for the Quarter Cask, 10 years old Cask Strength, or something from the independent bottlers.
I highly recommend
