Pommerscher Greif Batch 06 – whisky review

Pommerscher Greif

Pommerscher Greif is a German blend … and here I have to stop for a moment. The label shows a following statement: „Single Malt & Grain Blended Whisky”

Seriously? They could simply write „blend”, but presumably they would have to lower the price a bit (and the term „Single Malt” itself catches the eye and the liquor can be sold for a bit more money doesn’t it?). This strange term means no more than the fact that malt whisky comes exclusively from a single distillery. The rest is ordinary grain Whisky from column stills.

This is not a NAS. The bottle carries an age statement: „guaranteed aging above 1096 days”. Mercy! The calculator informed me that it was 3 years and one day.

Batch 06

Now good informations: un-chill filtered

Matured in 3 types of casks: new American oak, ex-sherry and ex-madeira

Color: tea, amber, most likely natural

Tasting notes

Nose: milk chocolate, hazelnuts, cappuccino, flour, fresh white bread, fresh cucumber, caramel, vanilla, prunes, freshly cut grass. Very strong alcoholic intense – but what to expect after just 3 years of maturation? The aroma is quite rich, but it reminds me a pretty good Whisky, mixed with vodka in the 50/50 ratio. You can feel the influence of Sherry and Madeira in the scent. In addition, a little sea breeze and something that smells a bit like diesel. 18/25

Palate: cloves, dark honey, apricot kernels, plums, roasted bread crust, Galia melon, butterscotch, espresso, watermelon. I let it stand in a glass for several minutes. Thanks to this, Whisky has opened and the alcoholic intensity has softened slightly. Toasted bread, Sherry, muscovado sugar. Alcohol, despite „resting process” (those few minutes in a glass), still poorly hidden, but it’s slightly better now, because just after pouring, it’s just undrinkable. 17.5 / 25

Finish: honey, cloves, caramel, Sherry. Sharp, alcoholic and medium pleasant. 16/25

Balance: we can feel the richness in the smell and the taste thanks to the fact that the Whisky has been un-chill filtered. That’s the plus point. The finish is undoubtedly the weakest part of this dram. 18/25

Overall: 69.5 / 100

I got this Whisky as a gift. I was happy because I didn’t know this distillery and was curious about something new. Besides, the bottle itself, looks good (although it has screw-cap instead of cork).

Then, when I checked the price… I was shocked. 55 Euro? Seriously? For a three-year old blend? I understand that the Madeira- and Sherry-casks are expensive, but, please. I would never buy it from my own will. In my opinion, the whole effect spoil those new American oak casks. I wonder how it would taste if ordinary ex-Bourbon casks would be.used in their place.

Well … it’s sharp, weak, unripe and way too expensive Whisky.

I don’t recommend, unless you get a sample – then you can try out of curiosity.
