Wild Turkey 101
I try to upload bourbon reviews regularly. Quite a while ago i took a sample of the Wild Turkey 101 to a vacation. That’s why the pics look a bit odd. Until now, I wrote reviews of more whiskeys from this distillery. At the end of the post you can find links to those tasting notes.
Wild Turkey 101
101 PROOF means 50.5% alcohol by volume
Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Matured for at least 6 years
Color: amber +2
Tasting notes
Nose: almonds, bananas, caramel, vanilla, peach, cotton candy, prunes. For 50.5% ABV, the alcoholic intensity is surprisingly well hidden. I like the smell itself. Slightly sweeter and a little bit nicer than eg Maker’s Mark. 22/25
Palate: there is power! Cloves, anise, marzipan, cocoa … reminds me of mulled wine a little bit. It’s very pleasant. Peaches in syrup, cherries in liqueur, buckwheat honey, ashes. Sweet and delicious. 22/25
Finish: warming, dry, a bit like Gin. Almonds, anise, ginger, bananas, caramel. 19.5 / 25
Balance: the perfect Whiskey for this price range. A beautiful, rich aroma with well-hidden alcohol. In the taste, the alcoholic content is much more pronounced, which should not be surprising with this volume. In this aspect, Maker’s Mark (45%) works slightly better, the taste profile of which seems to be a bit deeper – more complex. Here … strong, tasty, pleasant bourbon, which I will gladly return to because of its intensity. 22/25
Overall: 85.5 / 100
Other reviews:
Ralfy (2013): 87/100
Serge (2013): 81/100
Price: approx. EUR 25
I was impressed by this Whiskey. For comparison, I sipped it together with Maker’s Mark and both are on a similar level. Wild Turkey 101 consists of distillates from 6 to 8 years old. It was enough (as befits the US). You can clearly feel the influence of the oak barrel, which gives pleasantly sweet notes and hides alcohol well.
